The three Ogunro hand surgeons planning to repair a complex case and restore the needed hand function .

Post Op Instructions

Exercises/Therapy

  • After your surgery keep your hand elevated at all times. Failure to do so will cause unnecessary swelling, which will affect your ability to move your fingers. Use the sling to accomplish satisfactory elevation.
  • As soon as you get home start your exercises by making a full fist and straighten your fingers fully. It is recommended that you exercise at least six times daily, each session being for fifteen minutes. However if your surgery was to repair a broken finger do not move the finger.
  • You may be referred to a therapist if your progress is slow. Rehabilitation, or therapy, may be needed in certain circumstances depending on the extent of injury and your diagnosis.

Pain Medications

  • Take your pain medications as necessary.
  • Do not drive while taking the pain medications.
  • If you develop a rash or your skin itches you may be allergic to the medications, stop the medication and we will give you a different one.

Returning to Work

  • In general you may return to work as soon as you are not taking the pain medications.
  • Early return to work will hasten your recovery.
  • Modified duty can always be arranged with your employer even when you are not fully recovered.

Follow-up

  • After your surgery you need to follow-up with us at approximately one week for evaluation.

Dressing and Cast

  • Do not remove your dressing. This will be changed at your first post-op appointment. Do not touch the wound with your fingers.
  • Do not get your dressing wet. Protect it with a plastic bag when you take a shower.

Sutures

  • Sutures will be removed at two weeks or later if you have a cast.
